Englishis not my firstlanguage.Previously,I hadnot madeanyeffortsto learnthelanguagedespite itbeingone of themostcommonin theinternationalarena.I alwaysadmiredto listento peoplespeakingitfluently without makinghitchesin their speech.ThesoftspotI haditmademe believethatitwasan easylanguageto speakandunderstand.Thefirstfewdaysof theintroductionprovedmyprejudicialnotionsbecausethepronunciationandgrammarbecamehardnutsto crack.I firstdisagreedwith thefluentspeakersI interactedwith whoclaimedthatitwastheeasiestlanguageto learn.Due to theencouragementsI gotfrom fellowstudentsandteacherscoupledwith my immensedesireto be a fluentEnglish speaker,I bracedmyselfforthelongbutinterestingjourneyahead.

Icommencedmy journeyby comingto termswith thetaskof makingcorrectpronunciationsforthedifferentwords.Althoughtheuseof mediaandmusiccoupledwith aninterestingteachermadelearningquitefun,there weresomeaspectsof difficulties.Memorizing andinternalizing grammarwasone of themostdifficultthingsI experiencedtobecomeacquittedwith English language.I believethatyouagreeto a certainpointthatmy opinionof grammarnot beingamong theeasiestthingto understand.Ithas toomanyrulessurroundingitandlearningEnglish as a secondlanguagebecomeshardat thispoint.However,I cameto understandthatevenpeoplewhowerefluentin thiscoveted languagehadproblemswith grammarespeciallywhenitcameto writing.Therevelationignitedmy desirebecauseI understoodthatI didnot haveto explicitin grammarusageto becomea goodEnglish orator.Beingableto pronouncethewordswellwould serveas thebasisfora smoothacquisitionof thelanguage.

Tobecomea fastlearner,one has to acquainthimself with thepronunciationf soundsandsimplewords.Due to theaccentof my mothertongue,I wasnot ableto pronouncesomewordswell,andsomestudentsmadefunout of out thisdidnot determy efforts.Thischallengemademe lagbehind a littlebit.Italsomademe loseconfidencein everlearningandspeakingin a languagethat I somuchadmired.Theteacherrealizedmy thirstforknowingEnglish andbecamea personalhelper.Heledme somevideos of peoplepronouncingwordswith a lotof dexterityandduring my freetime,I triedto imitatethem.

Amajordrawbackin knowinghowto pronouncewordsandengagein Basic English discussionwasthetendencyof hangingout with peoplefrom my backgroundwherewecould speakour mothertongue.Severaltimes,I triedto ventureout of thegroupin searchof othercompanions,butI realizedthatmajorityof theinternationalstudentsusedtheir nativelanguage.Thebatchof studentslearningEnglish as thesecondlanguagewould be themostappropriateforme to interactwith since wewerein thesamecaliber.Minglingwith nativestudentswould makemy learningdifficultbecausetheywould rarelyusethebasicwords.Thejourneyto becomingan English speakerwasprovingto be toughthan I thought.

Iremembermy classmates makingfunof my pronunciationkindly,anditalmostmademe dread theapproachof my turnto pronouncea word.ItseemedthateventheteacherenjoyedthispartbecauseheensuredthatI would standout andspeakin English in frontof my class.At firstI feltas ifpeopleweremakingfunof me, butwith timeI realizedthattheyweretryingto maketheclasslively. I soonacceptedmy weaknessandevenmadefunof ittoo.I exploitedthechanceandearnedmoretimeto makemistakesthan mostof them. I alsousedthischanceto monitormy progress.

However,I nevergaveup. I workedeverydaytowards improvingmy pronunciationuntil everybody stoppedlaughingat me. I markeda movein thepositivedirectionby themagnitudeof thelaugh.Fainterlaughsshowedapositiveprogressin thepronunciation.Today,I laughwhenI recallsomeof thedifficultiesI wentthrough tryingto refinemy English language.I learnedthatPronunciation is paramountbecauseithelpsin communicationandexpressingideas.

Eventually,I wasableto learnandspeakEnglish eventhoughI am not as goodas thenativespeakers.Pronouncingwordsas wellas readinga textis an easytaskforme. With time,I believeI will be goodEnglish speakersandconverseeffortlessly with thenatives.However,I bearin mindthatthiswill onlybe successfulifI keepon practicingandshowingmy desireto learn.Theordealis not theeasiest,butI am at a pointwhereI cannot affordto turnback.I believeI can nowswimcomfortablyin theshallowendof thelanguage,andI am nowin theprocessof movingdeeperinto thedetails.

Ifyouare planningto embarkon thejourneyof learningEnglish pronunciation,thenyoumust be a readytrendin roughterrainsmarkedby theingrainedaccents,criticismandbeingthesubjectof funin class.However,thesewill fadewhenyouacceptyour fateandstandfirmto thestrongwavesof distraction.There is something I neverdid,andI believeitwould havemademy progressfat.I didnot lookforinternationalfriendsto initiatea discussionandsupportgroup.I believethatwecould havehelpedeachothersince weweresufferingfrom thesamelackof proficiency.

Practicingoftenwith a personto offerpositivecriticismis an alsoa goodmethodof improvingon pronunciation.Noteverybody can survivethefunI wassubjectto in classthat almostmademe quitaltogether.Havingfriendsto criticizepositivelyyoucan helpin knowingwhena word’spronunciationis betterthan in thefirstattemptwould be a greatasset. . Itmay involverecordingyourself andminglingwith friendswhospeakEnglish. I am not guaranteeingthatyouwill completelygetridof your accentbecauseithas takenyearsto developroots,andtheyhavea deepsetin your pronunciation.However,themostpronouncedeffectsof thesameget surpassedby thenewlanguageandeveryone can hearclearlyandunderstandyour utterances.I am proudof my progressandthefar I am in my journeyof learningEnglish as my secondlanguage.
