MathematicsTeaching and Learning

Thearticleby Johnson andHarris laysemphasison theimplementation of a systematicchangein mathematicsteachingandlearningthrough collaborative effortsbetween higherinstitutionsof learningandjuniorschools.Theprojectsoughtto bringtogetherteachers, learners, thestateandthelocalcommunitymembers.Thegeneralaimsof theprojectincludecreatinginterestin learnersto studymathematicswith a biasin algebra andengagingcollegeandpre-college teachersin hittingpointas wellas creatinga strongrapportwith thelocalcommunity.Asper thetwo authors, theinstitutionsof higherlearningcan playa verysignificantrolein creatinga strongbackgroundin mathematicsandscienceinthepreliminaryyearsof learning(Johnson &amp Harris, 1998).

Theprojecttookplacein three phases.Theinitialstagealsoreferredto as pre-algebra phase, involvedtheintroductionof algebra to younglearners.Amajorfeatureof thisstagewastheidentificationof weakstudentsandtakingthem through thesummeralgebra Academy to raisetheir performance.Thesecondstageknownas thebeginningof mathematicspathways involvedtheidentificationof outstandingteachersto actas pioneersof theprogram.Thenumberof teacherscontinuedto swellthrough theeffortsof theprojectmanagersto caterforthelargenumberof learners.Thelastphasehadcustomized methodsto improveteacherperformanceandinstructional skills.Itsoughtto createagoodrelationshipwith them andmonitortheir performancetowards theachievementof thedesiredresults.Studentswhoparticipatedin theprogramrecordedbetterresultsanda conclusionmadeitclearthatthemathematicspathway programraisedthestudent’sperformance(Johnson &amp Harris, 1998).

Despitetheprojectbeingsuccessful, themethodology usedto assessthecomplianceandcompetenceof theteachersas wellas their takein theprojectis quiteshallow.Questionnairesweretheonlytoolsgivento themtofill(Johnson &amp Harris, 1998). Amorecomprehensivemethodinvolvingtheuseof a varietyof toolswould haveallowedtriangulation to takeplaceanda consequentcollectionof credibleinformation.
