The level ofproductivity will hence be arrived at by dividing the number of stopsfor all the drivers assigned to a given route by the number of thedrivers that were assigned to the specific route. Through this thecompany will be able to establish benchmarks, for each driver thatcan be evaluated on any given day to establish whether there was pooror excellent performance (Heizer, 2013).

Inorder to reduce the daily variability in pick up call-ins, the casestudy specifies that majority of the customers desire to have a latepick up especially at 5 pm. However, it is impossible for the driverto be at more than one location at any given time. As a solution,smith should advice the customers to drop their packages at a secureplace where the driver can come to collect once they get to thelocation. The driver is hence able to collect the packages fewminutes after 5.00 Pm and all throughout the evening (Heizer, 2013).

Alternatively,for customers who lack a secure dropping place, Smith can reschedulethe operations such that deliveries are done in the morning while thepick-ups are collected later in the day. This will commit the driversto specifically focus on collecting the required pick-ups and hencereduce the workload per driver (Heizer, 2013).

Alternatively,Smith can establish the variability in terms of the average number ofthe required pick-ups in the various areas of operation. This willenable him to identify areas with high demands from those with lowdemands at any given time. Consequently, Smith can allocate moredrivers to areas with a high demand for pick-ups relatively to theareas that are established to have lower demand. The increased supplyof drivers will be able to handle the voluminous demand for pick-upsas compared to just sending the drivers haphazardly (Heizer, 2013).

Inorder to measure package pick up performance, Smith should establishthe unit of measurement as the number of pickups that are collectedper hour during an ordinary day that has the ordinary weather. Heshould then observe how the number of pickups decline as the weatherdeteriorates. In doing this, Smith should take into considerationthat in addition to weather, there are more determinants to thedriver’s performance such as traffic at any given hour in a day. Asa result, the standards set should not be obsolete. Smith shouldpresent to the drivers, a benchmark that they are required to achieveper day. Smith can also conduct a performance evaluation of thedriver’s from the customers. He should ask measurable questions toidentify the satisfaction and use the results to reward performingdrivers as well as motivate the colleagues. There should be standardstoo between the customers and the drivers especially in tandem withthe labor laws (Heizer, 2013).
