Oneof the most important technologies in the modern world that has animpact on technology-structure fit in organizations is the internetand internet based social networks. The impact of the internet onorganizations has been well catalogued in several academic works andbusiness stories. The internet and the social media has an impact onall aspects of a business organization including internal andexternal communications, employee recruitment and management, salespromotion and marketing and corporate social responsibility (Anitsal,2014, Millstein et al, 2014). There is no organization in the modernworld that can ignore the important impact of the internet onorganizational structure.
Theadvent of data capturing and monitoring devices will also have hugeimpacts on organizations structures and its relation with technology.Today, it has become relatively easy to capture personal data fromemployee remotely which is recorded electronically. Although thereare laws, for example, “Computer Fraud and Abuse Act” and“Electronic Communications Privacy Act” which limits the abilityorganization to monitor the activities of its employees, there areaspects of employee activities that can easily be monitored. Anearlier form of monitoring technology was installation of CCTV inworkplaces to record employee’s activity, although the primaryfunction is security (Sanders et al, 2013). The dawn of newtechnologies enables organizations to monitor communications andmovement of employees. A good example is tracking devices used infleet management.
Thesetechnologies will have huge impacts on the structure of theorganization. For example, internet based communication technologiesmake it easier for people to communicate or work remotely resultinginto efficiency in working groups. Today, people need not to be inthe same room or city to work as a group or hold meetings. Anorganization structure that requires working groups to be confined inthe same room will therefore be transformed. Additionally, somedepartments, such as a larger IT department will be created toaddress the increased demand for information technology, will beessential.
