SermonOutline, “The Power of Giving”
Christiansoften ponder over the question whether it is necessary to give.Others do not know how much to give and some feel that they havenothing to give. God wants us to give 10 percent of our income to Himand to share what we have with others. So why should we give?
It is a command
AsChristians, we have responsibilities towards our brothers and sistersand for you to get more you have to learn to give. It is a sin to begreedy and selfish and in order for one to lead a holy life, you haveto learn to give. Christian life is centered on giving, and as suchone should be more concerned about what they can give to others andnot instead, on what they can receive.
Thebest example that we can get about giving is from God. In John 3: 16,God gave us His only begotten son. This shows us as Christians how weshould give: giving without receiving.
Givingis a command from the Lord to us. Malachi 3: 10 states, “Bring youall the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in myhouse, and prove me now herewith, said the Lord of hosts, if I willnot open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, thatthere shall not be room enough to receive it.” By tithing, aChristian gives back to God what he has given them or rather enabledthem to have.
Tithingis one way of giving to God. A Christian should also give to otherpeople in need. In Deuteronomy 16:17, God says, “Everyman shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORDyour God which he has given you.”
Whenone gives to the poor, they are fulfilling a command from God as itis written in Proverbs 28:27, He that gives to the poor shall notlack but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse. If you wantto welcome good things in your life, learn to give which is yourChristian duty. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians commanded thepeople to excel in giving as they were excelling in grace (2Cor.8:7-8). By this, Paul meant that the Christians should aim to sharewhat they have with others.
We all have something to give
Thereis this notion in society that one can only give if they have morethan enough. In fact, no one could give if that would be the case.People tend to think that they must always give something big. Thatis wrong, everybody has something to give. The only thing that as aChristian you know how much to give is the tithe which 10 percent ofyour income. For the rest of the offerings, always learn to give morethan you can spare.
Thereis no rule saying that one can only give money. One can give theirnatural talents to the service of the kingdom or even sacrificingtheir personal time for the kingdom of God. God is the owner of allthat we have and thus no one can say that they do not have a thing.
Wheneverwe give, we should do so cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:6-7). Every personshould give sincerely and not what he or she has been compelled togive. If you give generously, you will also receive, in equalmeasure.
Asa Christian, you will realize that you are so blessed when you sharewhat you have with others. In order to touch the heart of God, weshould learn to give whatever we have and the Lord will bless usabundantly.
It is beneficial to give
Itis in giving that one receives. In Malachi 3:10, God promises to givemore to those who give. Whenever we give, we attract more than we canthink about in life (2 Cor 9:10-11). When we become cheerful givers,God blesses us with more for ourselves and enough to share withothers.
Christiansare often confused about how much they should give. It is importantto remember that all we have belongs to God and we are just managers. The first fruit of the harvest belongs to God and when we honor this, our barns are filled and they overflow (Proverbs 3:9-10).
Justthe same way one receives a blessing when they give cheerfully toGod, when one fails to give, they receive a curse (Malachi 3:8-10).Not giving is robbing God what he deserves.
Wemay have heard the gospel on tithing and sharing for long. Ifeverybody decides to live up to the command of God, we shall allexperience the blessings of God in our lives. The promises of God aretrue and He says that when we give, He shall open the floodgates ofheaven and we shall have so much that there will be no room to storewhat we shall receive. Those we see in society and think that theyare so privileged have learnt the secret of being cheerful givers. You do not need much so that you can give. What you have is more thanenough and the moment you start being grateful for what you have isthe moment your eyes will open and you will see that you have somuch.
