Perhaps career counselor should beginemphasizing on the need for company’s hiring unpaid interns toconduct meticulous training and supervision so that when they walkout of the organization, they are able to articulate to differentaspects of the industry they want to work in. Thinking illegal and noprotection under labor law may be the disadvantages of unpaidinternship. However, gaining experiences skills and opportunities maybe the most important advantages for unpaid internships. Therefore, avaluable and legal opportunity of unpaid internship should berecommended for four-year college students before their graduations.

First,unpaid internship can contribute to one’s resume. Though peoplethink unpaid internships are a method for profit companies to saveoutput, there are still 37% students have been offered jobs byobtaining experiences during unpaid internships. Since most companiesare seeking for experienced employees during hiring, if everybodyelse has an internship experience, but you don’t have one thenunder employers’ evaluations, there are no evidences to proof yourability of work.

RossPerlin, a graduate from Stanford and once unpaid intern and currentlywriting a book regarding this subject stated, “Internships havebecome the gateway into the white-collar work force… Employersincreasingly want experience for entry-level jobs, and many studentssee the only way to get that is through unpaid internships”(Reynolds &amp Findley, 2012). Internships experiences are themeasurements of a student in most cases of hiring. However, limitedinternships opportunities are offered each year and with a lot ofrequirements for applicants. For instance, a shy Asian female studentwith language barriers in English can barely obtain a chance to get apaid internship at a marketing company no matter how hard she canwork. It is common for hundreds of students from differentnationalities competing one paid internship and finally with a localstudent gets the offer. Unpaid internships have a lower thresholdcomparing to the paid one, because both the employers and internshave given up some values to come up a balance.

Themost important point is, although a student cannot earn money withunpaid internships and some poor students have financial problemswith maintaining an unpaid internship, he or she is actually paidwith skills, experiences, and opportunities. According to Killick(2011), “the calculation is that if you are prepared to invest sometime and effort there may be a big pay-off further down the road,through access into highly competitive and popular trades ofprofessions”. Why students could pay tuitions for learningknowledge in college, but cannot pay “tuitions” for unpaidinternships that offered them true experience about survival in thesociety. People could invest money for a four-year school lifewithout any doubt, but they usually would not like to invest time ina six months period-unpaid internship to contribute to the foundationof their successes. In a movie called, Pursuit to Happiness, whichwas based on the true experience of Chris Gardner, his one-yearstruggling with homelessness ending up with an unpaid internshipopportunity (Killick, 2011) because he held the chance and finallybecame very successful with his hard working. He had no money,nowhere to sleep and even no food at all. He still took advents ofany chances to get him a better life. Hence, please do not say unpaidinternships are just the games between rich students and poorcompanies.

Atthe end, there are a lot of debates for banning unpaid internships.Suppose that unpaid internships are not permitted now, the labormarket will have a big turbulence, It will be hard for the youth tofind jobs, because they don’t have any experiences. According toDobson (2014), Sandra Watt, the chief of organizational developmentat Thrive Group stated, “But making unpaid internships illegalwould limit young people, especially in the non-profit world”, and“you limit young people from getting employment experience if thelaw is going to say we cannot do it… That law would shortchangethose young people”. Young people from 18-25 are suffering thethoughts time about their poor social and working experience. Ifunpaid internships banned, at least 30% of students will have a hardtime to get job offers. The employment rate will increase especiallyamong the youth. Profit-companies would like to consider older peoplewho have more experiences than the graduations. On the other hand,non-profit organizations even like the White House, also offer unpaidinternships, will limit the internship numbers due to their budgets.

Thereis nothing worth trading with the experience that interns gain frominternships whether it is paid or unpaid. It is worth for a studentto get a chance to gain some experience if the financial situation isokay for a four-year college student. The justifications forinternships cannot be overstated. Considering that resources arelimited for most companies there must be a way through which themarket can give space for each student to obtain some experience forthe industry they would like to work for. Notwithstanding thelegality of unpaid internships, they are still vital for the successof a student. A student who has an opportunity to be internexperiences the production process of a product. They have firsthandinformation on how the staff design products, taken for analysis andreview by the executive before channeling it to the market for sale.An intern also gains particular intrinsic details of the working foran organization, which they would not have learned through classroomexperiences.

Inconclusion, the value of unpaid internships for students is the samefor paid internships because the primary reason for internships isfor students to gain real world experiences of working in theirpreferred industries. Unpaid internships have advents anddisadvantages. If students are afraid of the disadvantages, alsosince the paid internship is limited, they will have a hard time toget offers after graduation. No matter paid interns of unpaidinterns, the most valuable thing is how much experiences can thestudent practice. Unpaid internships are recommended once studentsfind those cases are legal and valuable for them in a long run.
